Abstract: There is a rise in prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in Kenya, and an increase in related complications, which lead to disability and death. Diet modification oriented for this group of patients includes recommendations to control blood sugar, lipid levels and pressure which are vital in lowering risk and complications development in the management of Type 2 diabetes. Studies indicate that adherence to diet therapy is weak in the midst of diet recommendations and patients’ education. There seems to be limited literature in developing countries as to the most critical factors in the prediction mix of adherence. This article attempts to display the competitiveness between socio-demographic and patient education related factors in the context of adherence. Across sectional analysis of a sample of 240 eligible diabetics was used and their dietary behaviour evaluated using a pre-tested dietary habit assessment survey tool with socio-demographic and patient-focus education factors. Linear regression preceded by principle axis factoring to categories adherences was executed. The results indicated that diet characterized by control of lipid levels was influenced by diet accessible within distance from home (β=0.211, t=2.053, ρ=0.041), while diet to control blood sugar and pressure was influenced by diet accessible from the workplace (β=0.193, t=2.027, ρ=0.044), occupation status (β=0.162, t=2.051, ρ=0.042), age (β=0.178, t=2.238, ρ=0.026), marital status (β=0.208, t=2.731, ρ=0.007) and diet found in the locality or surrounding environment (β=0.277, t=3.034, ρ=0.003). In conclusion, adherence enhancement seems to draw reference to education sessions focused on challenges faced by the unmarried, age specifics, occupation, setting specifics.

Abstract: Population based studies to measure the burden of hearing impairment are scarce in sub-Saharan Africa due largely to lack of allocation of resources. This study aims to report the prevalence and possible causes of hearing impairment in a semi-urban community. A cross-sectional community based survey using the World Health Organization Ear and Hearing disorders survey protocol was conducted in 2013. Adults and children hearing assessment was conducted via Pure-tone audiometry for air conduction thresholds at 0.5-4kHz with otoscopy. Ambient noise level was at 45dB. A total of 91 participants were tested with a hearing loss prevalence of 29(31.9%). Fifty three (58.2%) were females, population age range was 5-60years, with a mean age of 14.13years (SD: 13.51). Ear diseases were a major contributor to hearing loss 61(67.0%) affecting 5-14year old age-group, followed by unknown causes 19(20.9%). Other major causes of hearing impairment in this cohort were infectious diseases 8(8.8%), genetic conditions 2 (2.2%) and non-infectious conditions 1(1.1%) respectively. There was a significant difference in mean audiometric thresholds for the right and left ears respectively. The prevalence of hearing impairment in this community may indeed be quite high and calls for concerted efforts by relevant authorities to reduce the burden in our communities.

Abstract: This study was aimed at determining the efficacy of psychoeducation in improving attitudes towards professional psychological help seeking among young adults in Kenya. Four out of twenty teacher training colleges were sampled. Two colleges made up the control group while the other two made up the experimental group. Both groups were assessed at baseline, before the experimental group was presented with an intervention in form of two, two-hour each psychoeducation modules using power point while sited in their normal classrooms. The second assessment was done a day after the psychoeducation, while the control group received no intervention but were assessed again two days after the baseline assessment. The control group had no improvement in the summative scores of attitudes towards help seeking, while the experimental group increased positively in their attitudes towards seeking help for a mental illness, which is in line with other studies. Globally. We conclude that with education on opinions about mental illness and expectations about counseling, the youth could improve their attitudes towards seeking help for a mental illness problem. This study recommends that young adults and college students should be given education in order to improve their attitudes to seeking help for a mental illness. Collage students should have this education in their curriculum to assist them identify mental illness and seek help for the same.
